From day dot
Once you install you timber floor you can start using it straight away. However, if you plan to varnish or coat the timber after you install it then it is integral that you and any furniture stays off the floor for at least 48 hours until it has hardened. Once you are ready to bring in your furniture, make sure all the feet are given protective pads. These will help to reduce any scratches from scraping chairs back from a table or moving larger pieces around.
If you are installing large appliances, consider laying pieces of protective MDF as a path along which the appliance can be lifted and moved. This means that heavy item will never come into contact with your new floor and won’t get the chance to scratch it.
Maintaining your timber floor
Your maintenance routine will vary depending on the type of coating you apply to your floor after you install it. Oil coatings are easy to scratch, but they are also easily touch up and reapply. Expect to be maintaining an oil-coated floor up to three times a year. With a complete re-coat every three to seven years.
Cleaning your timber floor
Every floor needs to be clean of dust and other debris and the best method for this is either a broom or vacuum. Once your floor is free any rough particles you can spot clean with a cloth and gentle floor cleaner. When mopping your floor, use a mop that is just slightly damp. Some floors, particularly gloss finished timber, may need to be towel dried after mopping to avoid watermarks.
